November Skies

NGC 188 is a loose open cluster that has the distinction of being one of the oldest known open clusters at over 6 billion years old. Dim at mag. 10, but worth a look.

NGC 6946 is a mag. 9.5 face-on spiral galaxy in which ten supernovae have been observed. A medium sized Dob is needed. Look for the nearby open cluster NGC 6939 about 30' north.

NGC 7023 known as the Iris Nebula is a bright reflection nebula shining at mag. 7. Use a nebula filter for this one.

There are a few double stars and one Carbon star in Cepheus worth a look.

Omicron Cephei (ο Cephei) is a binary star consisting an orange giant primary of magnitude 5 and a secondary of magnitude 7.1.

Xi Cephei (ξ Cephei ) is another binary star. It has a blue-white primary of magnitude 4.3 and a yellow secondary of magnitude 6.5

Krüger 60 is an 11th-magnitude binary star consisting of two red dwarfs. The star system is one of the nearest, being only 13 light-years away from Earth. This one will be a tough object to see.

Though not a double star, Mu Cephei (μ Cephei) known as the Garnet Star is a Red Super Giant star as opposed to a Carbon type star. Its dep red color is easily seen with the naked eye at mag. 4. Beautiful sight!
